Han-sur-Lesse Cave, Belgium
The Han-sur-Lesse Cave is one of the most iconic karst systems in Belgium and represents a key natural laboratory for studying subterranean ecosystems. Carved by the underground course of the Lesse River through Devonian limestone, the cave combines vast galleries, active river passages, and richly decorated chambers, offering an exceptional diversity of physical and chemical microhabitats (Quinif and Hallet, 2017; Havron et al., 2004).

Beyond its spectacular geomorphology, Han-sur-Lesse is of major scientific interest due to the long-term stability of its subterranean environment. The cave hosts complex biological communities, including specialized invertebrates, microbial biofilms, and groundwater-associated organisms adapted to permanent darkness, high humidity, and low nutrient availability (Hubart and Dethier, 1999; Leruth, 1939). These conditions make the site particularly valuable for studying ecological specialization, trophic interactions, and evolutionary adaptation in subterranean systems.

The presence of an active underground river further enhances its importance, as it allows the study of hydrological connectivity between surface and subsurface environments. Organic matter inputs, seasonal variations in water chemistry, and microbial transport provide insight into how surface processes influence cave ecosystems. Han-sur-Lesse therefore serves as a reference site for understanding karst functioning at the interface between geology, hydrology, and biology (https://grotte-de-han.be/).
